Bouras, S., Dinas, K. & Griva, E. 2014. From functional literacy to critical literacy: a comparative account of the greek language curricula for primary education. In selectee papers of 2nd International Conference Education Across Borders. Albania – Corçe

Since the educational reforms being established are normally reflected on an effort to reform the National curricula, the recent educational reform in Greek Language Curriculum, has included the overall philosophy and principles of ―critical literacy‖. Critical literacy focuses on developing critically literate individuals to meet the challenges of the 21st century. In other words, it aims at developing readers and writers as active participants in the reading and writing process. As a result, the communicative-genre based approach is ineffective to fully meet that demand.

This paper examines the “transition” from the communicative approach and functional literacy to critical literacy in the curricula for primary education and its impact on language teaching in Primary Education. The starting point of this study is the so-called “reform Arseni” namely the three successive versions of the curricula of 1999, 2001 to 2003(the Cross-thematic Curriculum framework), which are compared with the reformed pilot curriculum of the New School (2011). Through a comparative analysis of basic aspects of these curricula, the study aims at investigating how the principles of functional and critical literacy are presented in the Cross- thematic Curriculum framework (2003) and the Curriculum of the New School (2011), in an attempt to identify the innovative characteristics of the latter curriculum. Furthermore, an attempt was made to map the aspects of convergence and divergence, and to pinpoint the rate of exploiting the theoretical principles in the language teaching practice. The comparative study indicated the innovative aspects of the Curriculum of New School, which focuses on developing relationships between language and social practices, and enhancing reflection, communication, and critical awareness, as well as promoting the use of multi-media and multi-modality literacy in the classroom.

Literacy practices are changing rapidly in daily life because of media. Consequently, there is an urgency for educational changes, in order the requirements for the new communication skills to be fulfilled and a critical awareness of media to be developed. This means that not only is media literacy a necessity in educational settings, but also it has to be critical. However, any update of the curriculum on the basis of critical literacy pedagogy has effect on the teaching practices. The aim of this paper was, after mentioning and analyzing the applied teaching practices of critical media literacy in different educational settings of developed countries, to provide suggestions of implementing critical media literacy in the Greek educational system.

Tsitoura, V., Alevriadou, A. & Dinas, K. 2014. Writing in english as a second/foreign language: a longitudinal study focused on students with specific learning disabilities of 5th and 6th elementary school grades: a preliminary analysis. Στο: 1st International Conference «EDUCATION ACROSS BORDERS», Florina October 5 -7, 2012, Conference Proceedings (ISSN: 2241-8881), σσ. 512-523

The present study is concerned with eliciting information about the errors made and the difficulties encountered as well as the strategies utilized by students with specific learning disabilities while writing in English as a second/foreign language. More specifically, the study aims at:

a. identifying the errors made and the difficulties encountered by the students of the fifth and the sixth grades of primary school when they perform a writing task; recording the range of the cognitive, metacognitive and socioaffective strategies they employ in the writing process and

c. identifying the possible differences between students with and without specific learning disabilities in their using of writing strategies and in their making of errors.

The sample consisted of 88 students with and without specific learning disabilities aged between 11 and 13. The data for the study were selected through the following instruments: (a) a variety of writing activities to be done by the students in order to gather data concerning the detection of errors and difficulties in writing, (b) thinking aloud reports to investigate the students’ writing strategies in the pre-writing, while-writing and post-writing stages and (c) retrospective interviews to understand the students’ writing sub-processes. The data have been collected and we are in the process of analyzing them. Both quantitative and qualitative approaches will be adopted for the analysis of the data. The findings of the study are expected to contribute to the discussion of research on the writing difficulties students with specific learning disabilities meet with.

Maroniti, K., Stamou, A., Dinas, K. & Griva, E. 2014. Tracing (dis)continuities between children’s literacy practices at home and in the kindergarten: a case study. Στο: 1st International Conference «EDUCATION ACROSS BORDERS», Florina October 5 -7, 2012, Conference Proceedings (ISSN: 2241-8881), σσ. 496-503

Several studies have identified the central role of mass cultural and media texts in the shaping of young children’s out-of-school literacy practices (e.g. Browne 1999, Marsh & Thompson 2001). Although it is often supported that early childhood educators need to take account of the home literacy practices of their students, they tend to be negatively disposed towards mass culture, expressing concerns about its content and educational value (e.g. Dyson 1997, Seiter 1999), and thus the sociocultural experiences which are closest to the child are rarely included in the literacy events he/she participates in the nursery (e.g. Dyson 2001, Marsh 2000a, 2000b). As a result, a dissonance between out-of-school and schooled literacy practices of children is often detected, with important consequences especially for those coming from the lower socio- economic strata. Focusing on the kindergarten of a socially unprivileged suburb of Thessaloniki (Diavata), we explore young children’s (aged 5-6 years old) access to and use of mass culture and media at home and in the nursery as well as teachers’ perspectives about the use of mass cultural and media resources in early childhood settings. Qualitative data were collected from a range of sources, including semi-structured interviews with children and teachers, questionnaires with parents and unstructured observations in the kindergarten classroom. Results indicate that children’s literacy practices at home were focused on television, whereas in the kindergarten a focus was given on the reading of books with scientific, mythological or religious content. Teachers were found ambivalent about the inclusion of mass culture at school, while parents tended to under-report their children’s use of mass cultural texts at home.
