Περίληψη
The conditions for zeroing the mutual flux between two closely spaced coil antennas are examined. Our analysis is expanded to examine the case of multiple linear antenna coils. Array antennas are used in many areas including magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), in which we are interested. Theoretical as well as experimental results are presented and compared. Good agreement between theory and measurements has been confirmed. These results allow us to suggest a two-dimensional receiving array antenna.

Περίληψη
This paper presents a single-channel alternative detection system for magnetic resonance imaging and spectros-copy experiments. After the phase error identification, which is realized though a simple method, one can correct the reconstructed image and discriminate between positive and negative frequencies qithout any loss of the S/N ratio. Since we have only one channel, that is a real signal, we can use the Hartley instead of the Fourier transform. The former is faster and requires less storage memory.

Περίληψη
The Zak tranform is one of the various time-frequency representations that are used in the field of signal analysis. We examine its performance for the type of signals encountered in NMR spectroscopy. A discrete version of the Zak transform is derived and typical examples are presented. The results are compared with those obtained from the Wigner distribution and standard techniques for the quantitative analysis of FIDs.

J4. K.P. Vassiliadis, P.A. Angelidis, G.D. Sergiadis, "Reconstruction of Magnetic Resonance Images Using One Dimensional Techniques", IEEE Trans. Med. Imag., Dec. 1993.

Περίληψη
Whenever DFT (discrete Fourier transform) processing of a multidimensional discrete signal is required, one can apply either a multidimensional FFT (fast Fourier transform) alforithm, or a single-dimension FFT algorithm, both using same number of points. That is, the dimensions of a "multidimensional" signal, and of its spectrum, are a matter of choice. Every miltidimensional sequence is completely equivelant to a one-dimensional function in both "time" and "frequency" domains. This statement applied to MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) explains why one can reconstruct the slice by using either one-dimensional or two-dimensional methods, as it is already done in echo planar methods. In the commonly used spin warp methods, the image can be also reconstructed by either one- or two-dimensional processing. However, some artifacts in the images reconstructed from the original "zig-zag" echo planar trajectory, are shown to be due to the wrong dimensionality of the FFT applied.

Περίληψη
We present here a technique for MR image compression. It is based on a transform coding scheme using the wavelet transform and vector quantization. Experimental results show that the method offers high compression ratios with low degradation of the image quality. The technique is expected to be particularly useful wherever storing and transmitting large numbers of images is necessary.

J7. P.A. Angelidis, "Fourier Transformation in NMR Imaging and Spectroscopy", Concepts in Magnetic Resonance, vol. 8, no 6, pp. 339-381, 1996

Περίληψη
This work aims at two purposes tutoring and reference. It is an introductory, concise text for the newcomers to Fourier transform NMR, and it is a reference source for those who are involved in NMR spectroscopy and imaging an who have already made themselves familiar with the concepts of frequency and spectrum. The work attempts to help the reader understand the natural meaning of Fourier transform theory, beginning with basic concepts and proceeding to more complicated ones, step by step, covering almost every aspect of interest in the area. It also introduces two new concepts in NMR signal-processing theory: time-frequency representations and the temporal autocorrelation function. New algorithms of spectral estimation and image reconstruction, based on this original material, are proposed. The new techniques fully exploit the special characteristics of the NMR signal. The tutoring material is presented qualitatively, and it includes only fundamental mathematics. Throughout the text, an effort is made to explain important concepts in simple terms, usually through examples, so that the introduction of new information flows smoothly and no extensive spiritual endeavour is required from the reader.

When Jean Baptiste Joseph Fourier (born 1768 in Auxerre, France; died, 1830 in Paris) was orphaned at the age of 9, he was placed by a bishop in Auxerre's military school. Ha had hoped to become an army engineer, but because he was not of noble birth that path was forbidden to him. He took a teaching position, which he held until the eruption of the French Evolution, when his competence at administration led to political and diplomatic assignments in Egypt, Palestine and elsewhere.

Περίληψη
The ultra fast Fourier transform (UFFT) provides the means for a very fast computation of a magnetic resonance (NR) image, because it is implemented using only additions and no multiplications at all. It achives this by approximating the complex exponential functions involved in the Fourier transform (FT) sum with computationally simpler periodic functions. This approximation introduces erroneous spectrum peaks of small magnitude. We examine the performance of this tranform in some typical MRI signals. The resulta show that this transform can very quickly provide an MR image. It is proposed to be used as a replacement of the classically used FFT whenever a fast general overview of an image is required.

Περίληψη
An integrated home care and telemonitoring service chain, the e-Vital service, is presented aimed at large sensitive parts of the European population, the "at-risk" citizens, who are usually patients with a stable medical condition that allow a near normal life but may suddenly deteriorate and put life at risk. This service will increase their quality of life and their feeling of safety concerning their health. The eVital project focuses on the implementation and exploitation of a modular and ambulatory secure telemedicine platform, which is using easily wearable vital signs monitoring devices, causing minimal discomfort to patients, and which transfer in real time and on-line critical vital parameters to doctors and/or medical experts/consultants, regardless of their location, while getting feedback to increase their feeling of comfort or in case of alarm.

Περίληψη
In the Greek pilot of the e-Vital project, remote telemedicine services are provided to chronic cardiac and pulmonary patients who are not confined to a hospital (i.e. receiving home/ambulatory health care) with the aim of exploring the dynamics of interactive continuous chronic patient monitoring, particularly focusing on the impact on patients' quality of life, the patient's active involvement in their own care and according impact on the overall quality of healthcare privision, as well as the benefits for healthcare providers (time management, patient management, savings, etc.)

The current trial in progress validates the business potential of remote monitoring services and demonstrates the technical envirenment that enables patient - doctor interaction regardless of location and the according communication modes and protocols. The domain for applying the envisaged service is the private healthcare sector and the users groups include individual chronic patients with cardiac and pulmonary diseases.

So far, from the patient's point of view, the service mainly appeals to patients with arrhythmias due to lightweight technology and easy processes involved in the transmission of 1-lead ECG. Asthma and COPD patients are also enthusiastic, as they can receive doctor advice in real time. From the health professional's point of view the service has real added value in the fields of diagnosis, prevention, monitoring and follow up. In the case of asthma and COPD the value of the service in diagnosis is even more apparent as these patiens may be asymptomatic, when they visit their doctor and have exacerbations when they are at home. e-Vital in this case ensures that the healthcare professional will acquire the complete image of the patient condition. Finally, the experiences gained so far indicate that e-Vital could be particularly efficient in isolated areas, with shortage of experienced scientific personnel.

J23. A. Berler, P. Angelidis, D. Koutsouris, "The Use of HL7 as an Interoperability Framework in a Regional Healthcare System in Greece," Journal of Telecommunications and Information Technology, no. 4/2005

Περίληψη
The integration of information systemps represents one of the most urgent priorities of a regional healthcare authority in order to meet its clinical, organizational and managerial needs. Current practice shows that the most promising approach to achive a regional healthcare information system to use a health level 7 (HL7) message-based communication infrastructure between healthcare sites. The system is a complete and integrated information system at a regional level that comprises all types of healthcare levels, that includes interoperability issues, that covers most of the needed components, and that is able to work efficiently in a secure wide area network to ensure data privacy and confidentiality. Another important feature of the proposed solution is that it creates an interoperability framework that can be replicated from one healthcare insitution to another. In that sense, common interoperability messages can be used to interconnect heterogeneous information systems. In response to this strategy, more than 10 different consortiums have submitted proposals to the Greek government and the proposed interoperability framework seems to be widely accepted as a solution to enhance information and communication technologies developments in the healthcare sector in Greece.

J26. Berler, A., Tagaris, A., Angelidis, P., Koutsouris, D.A. (2006) "Roadmap towards healthcare information systems interoperability in Greece", Journal of Telecommunications and Information Technology, Vol.2 pp59-73

Περίληψη
The advantages of the introduction of information and communication technologies (ICT) in the complex healthcare sector are already well known and well stated in the past. It is common knowledge that in order to install any type of information system in healthcare, six main groups of issues have to be dealt with: organizational and cultural matters related to healthcare, technological gap between healthcare professionals and information science experts, legal requirements on the confidentiality of personal data, of patient related data and on data privacy, industrial and market position of healthcare informatics and interoperability complexity, lack of vision and leadership of the health care managers and health authorities and user acceptability and usability of the proposed information systems. In order to meet these issues stated above, a special focus group (Z3) performed an assessment of the situation of healthcare informatics in Greece and of the main key points that would lead to success. In that sense it is now common knowledge that Greece is lagging information and communication technology progress in healthcare because almost none of the above mentioned issues were dealt with. This assessment is the result of the interaction of more than 150 decision makers, medical informaticians, healthcare practitioners and other individual involved in healthcare. As a conclusion, this focus group resulted in 4 major propositions that will lead to healthcare informatics introduction with better success chances: focus on terminologies and standards, focus on interoperability and information systems sustainability, focus on clear goals and system metrics that can create a healthcare performance management cockpit, and focus on people and what they have to say, by creating a e-health forum. These conclusions were taken into consideration by the Greek government and are incorporated the IASYS project, the national healthcare informatics framework for the next ten years.

Περίληψη
Today's state of the art in exercise physiology, professional athletics and sports practice in general clearly shows that the best results depend on the personalisation and continuous update of the recommendations provided to an athlete training, a sports lover or a person whose medical condition demands regular physical exercise. The vital signs information gathered in telemonitoring systems can be better evaluated and exploited if processed along with data from the subject's electronic health records, training history and performance statistics. In this context, the current paper intends to exploit modern smart miniaturised systems and advanced information systems towards the development of an infrastructure for continuous, non-invasive acquisition and advanced processing of vital signs information. In particular, it will look into wearable electronics embedded in textile capable of performing regular or exceptional measurements of vital physiological parameters and communicating them to an application server for further processing.

To this effect, the nodes of a BAN synchronize with their BAN controller node. Moreover, controller nodes of different BANs cooperate to agree on a WSN global and/or to transfer UTC time. To reduce the number of exchanged synchronization messages, we use an environmental-aware time prediction algorithm. The performance analysis in this paper shows that our approach exhibits very advanced security, accuracy, precision, and low-energy trade-off. For comparable precision, our proposal outstands related clock synchronization protocols in energy efficiency and risk of attacks. These results are based on computations.

Περίληψη
In modern cooperative wireless networks, the resource allocation is an issue of major significance. The cooperation of source and relay nodes in wireless networks towards improved performance and robustness requires the application of an efficient bandwidth sharing policy. Moreover, user requirements for multimedia content over wireless links necessitate the support of advanced Quality of Service (QoS) features. In this paper, a novel bandwidth allocation technique for cooperative wireless networks is proposed, which is able to satisfy the increased QoS requirements of network users taking into account both traffic priority and packet buffer load. The performance of the proposed scheme is examined by analyzing the impact of buffer load on bandwidth allocation. Moreover, fairness performance in resource sharing is also studied. The results obtained for the cooperative network scenario employed, are validated by simulations. Evidently, the improved performance achieved by the proposed technique indicates that it can be employed for efficient traffic differentiation. The flexible design architecture of the proposed technique indicates its capability to be integrated into Medium Access Control (MAC) protocols for cooperative wireless networks.

Evagelopoulos "Utilization of a multi-parameter sensor network for on-line monitoring of the water quality in the lignite mining area of Kozani Greece", Special issue of the Desalination and Water Treatment (DWT) Journal, www.deswater.com (accepted for publication)

Περίληψη
The present study is focused on the examination and evaluation of environmental pressures on the aquatic resources of Western Macedonia Region (Greece) and particularly in Kozani lignite mines area, and on the development of a water quality monitoring system in the region, in order to identify potential impacts to the adjacent water resources. A multi-parametric sensor system was installed in three representative sites of the target area and the corresponding measured parameters included pH, temperature, conductivity, nitrate ions (NO3-), sulfate ions (SO4-2), chloride ions (Cl-) for a period of about ten months. Additionally, certain other complementary physicochemical parameters (turbidity, hardness, COD, BOD5. DO, TSS, NO2-, NH4+ , Fe and Al) were measured in selected grab samples, collected from certain points in the same area, in order to have an integrated view of water quality. The pH values ranged between 7.6 and 8.3 and remained quite stable in all three monitoring stations. Conductivity values ranged from 188 to 1082 μS/cm; in addition, the wide NO3- content observed only in Ag. Dimitrios PPC Station was attributed to the discharge of partially treated wastewater effluents. A detailed analysis of recorded measurements on a day-to-day level, especially for SO4-2 and Cl- values, revealed potential pollution incidents. Comparison with meteorological data of the area for the corresponding period did not show any significant correlation between measured concentrations and rainfall quantity, indicating a negligible effect of surface drainage on water quality.

Περίληψη
Recent vehicular networking activities include novel automotive applications, such as public vehicle to vehicle/infrastructure (V2X), large scale deployments, machine-to-machine (M2M) integration scenarios, and more. The platform described in this paper focuses on the integration of eHealth in a V2I setting. This is to allow the use of Internet from a vehicular setting to disseminate health-related information. From an eHealth viewpoint, the use of remote healthcare solutions to record and transmit a patient's vital signs is a special telemedicine application that helps hospital resident health professionals to optimally prepare the patient's admittance. From the automotive perspective, this is a typical vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communication scenario. This proposal provides an IPv6 vehicular platform, which integrates eHealth devices and allows sending captured health-related data to a personal health record (PHR) application server in the IPv6 Internet. The collected data is viewed remotely by a doctor and supports his diagnostic decision. In particular, our work introduces the integration of vehicular and eHealth testbeds, describes related work and presents a lightweight auto-configuration method based on a DHCPv6 extension to provide IPv6 connectivity with a few numbers of messages.

Περίληψη
Carotid atherosclerosis is the main cause of fatal cerebral ischemic events, thereby posing a major burden for public health and state economies. We propose a web-based platform named CAROTID to address the need for optimal management of patients with carotid atherosclerosis in a twofold sense: (a) objective selection of patients who need carotid-revascularization (i.e. patients with vulnerable atherosclerotic lesions), using a multifaceted description of the disease consisting of imaging, biochemical and clinical markers, and (b) effective storage and retrieval of patient data to facilitate frequent follow-ups and direct comparisons with related cases. These two services are achieved by two interconnected modules, namely the computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) tool and the intelligent archival system, in a unified, remotely-accessible system. We present the design of the platform and we describe three main usage scenarios to demonstrate the CAROTID utilization in clinical practice. Additionally, we evaluate the platform by performing a trial use in a real clinical environment. The CAROTID evaluation provided encouraging results in terms of CAD performance (96% accuracy in discriminating vulnerable atherosclerotic lesions), computational efficiency (0.5 s retrieval query time, 5 min CAD decision), and ease-of-use by vascular physicians. Large datasets and future evaluation sessions in multiple medical institutions are still necessary to reveal with confidence the full potential of the platform.

Περίληψη
The present study describes the development of a methodology for the identification of potential pollution incidents in surface water bodies employing certain statistical techniques. More specifically, “Soulou” water stream which is located within Ptolemaida lignite mines area in Western Macedonia Region (Greece) was examined during this study. An on-line water quality monitoring system using multi-parametric sensors was installed in three representative sites of the study area, and the corresponding measured parameters included pH, temperature, conductivity, nitrate ions (NO3-), sulfate ions (SO4-2), chloride ions (Cl-) for a period of about ten months (2010). The data collected from the monitoring station were then processed employing a statistical approach exploring possible correlations with the volumetric flow of lignite mines water drainage into “Soulou” stream, in order to identify and justify potential pollution incidents from lignite mining activity. The results showed that fourteen potential pollution incidents were revealed during the entire monitoring period, between May 2010 and October 2010 (six attributed to “Notio Pedio” and eight to “Kardia” lignite mine drainage point). Most active months where frequent potential pollution effects were observed, were May, June and July for pH, Cl- and SO4-2; however conductivity cannot be considered as an index of potential pollution incident since it did not correspond to a significant change of water quality. From the detailed analysis of the periods where potential pollution incident were identified, it was deduced that similar trends in the variations of the quality parameter values were observed in 12 out of 14 cases, justifying the proposed statistical approach as a method for the identification of potential pollution incidents.

Περίληψη
There is some wonder about the fact that one can reconstruct a 2D object by taking a single projection of the object and using 1D Fourier processing methods. However, a solid interpretation can be founded on the following two points: 1) The FT of a periodical function is a discrete function. In a 2D discrete, function there is a specific projection angle from which the entire object can be reconstructed. Producing a series of echoes the MRI signal becomes a periodical function and therefore the image becomes a discrete function, as known. 2) Any MxN 2D discrete function with MxN points both in time and frequency domain. Consequently a 1D FT is adequate to reconstruct the original image, as implemented in echo-planar.

The MRI signal, in the presence of a linear gradient, due to T2 is the inverse Laplace and not the inverse Fourier Transform (FT) of the projection. Thus, computing the Laplace Transform of the signal one can extract both the spatial and the T2 information. Therefore one can obtain proton density and T2 weighted images using a unique set of acquired data, that is from a single pulse sequence.

Περίληψη
Edge detection is a commonly used approach in image segmentation and it enhances the diagnostic value of medical images. Usually the edges are determined with the help of numerical calculation of the two dimensional gradient of the image function. This results into the inverse FT of the function kxkyF(kx,ky) where F(kx,ky) is the FT of f(x,y). Therefore the computation of the gradient of the image is equivalent to the linear elimination of the low frequencies of the image.

It may seem odd that one can reconstruct a 2D object by taking a single projection of that object and using 1D FT processing methods, as it is done in the Echo Planar methods in Magnetic Resonance Imaging. Περίληψη
The ultra fast Fourier transform provides the means for a very fast computation of an MR image, because it is implemented using only additions and no multiplications at all. It achieves this by approximating the complex exponential functions involved in the Fourier transform sum with computationally simpler periodic functions. This approximation introduces erroneous spectrum peaks of small magnitude values. We examine the performance of this transform in some typical MRI signals. The results show that this transform can very quickly provide an MR image. It is proposed to be used as a replacement of the classically used FFT whenever a fast general overview of an image is required.

We present the Greek pilot of the DISCUS project. The rationale for the project stems from the observation that cost-effective professional health and care services are becoming increasingly important due to changing demographics, and increased demands on limited care resources. There is the opportunity for telematics to directly increase the efficiency and quality of care by making knowledge, skills and experience more accessible to care providers. This is particularly relevant in rural communities where they may have little or no opportunities to share knowledge and experiences with peers, as is the case in the Greek site located in the island of Samos. The primary objective of DISCUS therefore to provide an Internet based information/training, support and communication system especially for carers in more remote areas, which will allow them to exchange ideas and benefit from the knowledge base of other professional carers across Europe. Extensive dissemination opportunities are also foreseen amongst educational/training centres in that the system will provide an easy to use, time-saving and qualified learning resource.DISCUS will follow user centred design principles to develop an Internet based service. The project will test the feasibility of producing a generic service, and will identify the ease with which this can be tailored to meet local conditions.

Resonance Imaging, Nuclear Medicine and Digital Radiology, which facilitate improvement in patient care, have been satisfactorily embraced by the Medical community, this has not been the case with Healthcare Informatics. Thus, it can be argued that issues such as Data Management, Data Modelling and Knowledge Management have a long way to go before reaching the maturity level that other technologies have achieved in the Medical sector. A variety of reasons could be proposed for this issue [1-2], though with a short analysis it becomes rather clear that modern ICT present integration problems within the Healthcare sector because of the way the latter is organised. Healthcare is a strongly people-centred sector in which ICT has been considered more as an intruder, as a "spy" to the healthcare professionals' way of doing things and as a competitor to this people- centred model. Thus, if ICT intend to prove its advantages towards establishing an information society, or even more a knowledge society, it has to focus on providing service-oriented solutions. In other words, it has to focus on people and this has not been the case in most of the circumstances.

Communications networks, services, technological advancements and liberalization of the telecommunications sector are considered within the context of EU directives. The purpose of this article is not a detailed instruction for success or a policy manual for implementation by each country. This is a general- purpose article aimed at identifying common key issues and making general suggestions that are common for all WBC.

Περίληψη
It is paradoxical that, although several major technological discoveries such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Nuclear Medicine and Digital Radiology, which facilitate improvement in patient care, have been satisfactorily embraced by the Medical community, this has not been the case with Healthcare Informatics.

Περίληψη
The Mobinet service concept emerged, as points of care move closer to the patient and the citizen undertakes a more active role in healthcare monitoring and prevention. Today's advances in monitoring devices and telecommunication networks have made possible a viable solution regarding the provision of continuous health monitoring services seamlessly. Utilizing the information and communication technologies (ICT) and medical industry advances, Mobinet exploits a modular telemedicine platform, to provide a personalized and location independent service focusing on prevention (rather than disease management) to support increasing patients needs for self-empowerment and increasing the quality in the healthcare delivery away from the traditional nursing areas. The business plan explores the potential of telemonitoring services and draws the business, financial and marketing strategies for the successful penetration to the Greek market. The paper presents two models for the provision of health-telemonitoring services to all citizens and examines the added value and effectiveness of the proposed services. Data from real life case studies are extracted. The future of mobile healthcare is discussed.

Περίληψη
Maintainability, the ability of a pre-existing operational healthcare Information System (IS) to be retained and smoothly incorporated in an integrated Regional Healthcare Information System (RHIS), is a challenge for large scale implementations covering different healthcare entities, vendors, and diverse user needs. Fostering maintainability can contribute to increased user acceptance, containment of IT costs, and incremental development. Starting from experience gained from tenders in the Greek public health sector, different aspects of maintainability are discussed based on quantitative and qualitative data. HL7 and other interoperability standards can promote maintainability at the technical level, however, business and marketing perspectives need to be accommodated as well for long-term sustainability.

Resource allocation in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) is certainly a challenging issue. WSNs are characterized by special features, like energy constraints and limited computing resources. Latest trends define that sensors should be able to provide Quality of Service (QoS) demanding data transmission. A modern approach in bandwidth sharing considers both the packet queue load as well as the traffic priority. A new QoS aware channel sharing approach is introduced, analyzing the effect of queue load in WSN Medium Access Control (MAC). The analysis reveals that the queue load factor has a great impact on QoS provision in bandwidth sharing, while packet priorities are also considered.

This paper aims at presenting ehealth and Telemedicine technologies and their role in Aerospace Medicine. The starting point for a similar analysis is the definitions of all terms in use e.g. eHealth as well as Telemedicine that will eventually lead to a detailed classification of applications based on the platforms defined before. Technology in general is the great enabler for all applications including the aforementioned ones, hence a presentation of the prominent technological achievements is considered as essential for the discussion. Following a hierarchical approach, after the enabling technological platforms and their respective applications, come the scenarios for implementation of services. This is where the generalization intersects with the idiosyncrasies of aerospace medicine in an effort to depict the scenarios of use covering the needs of yet another scientific field. The predominant implementation scenarios of special services in the framework of aerospace medicine will be indentified and described. Finally, a conclusions section will summarize the overall discussion highlighting the most important issues.

Περίληψη
The present study is focused in the development of a water quality monitoring system of effluents and drainage from lignite mining activities in the region of Western Macedonia (Kozani), and in the investigation of potential impacts to the adjacent water resources by the installation and operation of an appropriate network of sensors. Particularly, the aim of this paper is to present the process of the design, installation and operation of a network initially consisting of three multi-parameter sensor systems, located in the wider lignite mines region of Kozani, in order to monitor the surface and underground water quality of the aquatic resources of the area. The basic physicochemical parameters measured by the multi-parameter sensors system included pH, temperature, conductivity, nitrate ions (NO3-), sulfuric ions (SO4-2), chloride ions (Cl-) for a period of about ten months. Additionally, certain other complementary physicochemical parameters have been measured in selected samples collected from the same areas, in order to deduce an integrated view of water quality. The pH values ranged between 7.6 and 8.3 and remained quite stable in all three monitoring stations. Observed fluctuation in conductivity measured values from 188 to 1082 μS/cm was related to variations in water quality characteristics especially in the surface water monitoring sites. The wide NO3- content only in Ag. Dimitrios PPC Station was attributed to wastewater discharge. Detailed analysis of recorded measurements on a day-to-day level, especially for SO4-2 and Cl- values, revealed potential pollution incidents.

In this paper we evaluate the basic methods of video transmission, focusing on multicast, the popularity of which has increased over the last years. Although the specific technique is able of reducing significantly the consumption of network resources, such as the bandwidth, the specifications of IEEE 802.11 family networks do not support the mechanisms for reliable multicast transmission. Therefore, multicast video transmission over those wireless networks is considered to be almost inapplicable. In this paper we propose the use of VPN technologies for deploying an efficient and low cost infrastructure of multicast video transmission over wireless networks.

Περίληψη
Communication networks' energy consumption poses a considerable threat to the environment stability. The expansion of access networks, which constitute the main playground of the Internet backhaul, is accompanied by numerous energy inefficient devices and equipments. Passive optical networks (PONs) is a potential dominant technology on the field of access networking, hence the reduction of the consumed energy of the optical devices forms a critical issue. In this paper, an efficient green PON is introduced, having two main targets: a) to reduce the energy consumption, by allowing optical devices to operate longer in sleep mode, and b) to maintain PON's good performance. Beyond the green provisioning, the proposed scheme is able to increase occasionally the network performance in terms of mean packet delay and packet drop ratio. This is accomplished by reducing the amount of control messages between subscribers, operating in sleep mode, and central office, allowing more bandwidth to be allocated for data delivering.

Περίληψη
Electrooculographic (EOG) artefact is one of the most common contaminations of Electroencephalographic (EEG) recordings. The corruption of EEG characteristics from Blinking Artefacts (BAs) affects the results of EEG signal processing methods and also impairs the visual analysis of EEGs. In this paper, our scope was a comparative analysis of the performance of three standard denoising methods like continuous Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD), Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) and Kalman Filter (KF). In order to evaluate the performance of EMD, DWT and KF of noise reduction and to express the quality of the denoised EEG, we calculate several indexes such as the Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR). All the results obtained from noise simulated EEG data show that WT achieved the greatest SNR difference and also the mode mixing issue of EMD affected this method's performance.

Περίληψη
Undoubtedly, energy consumption in communication networks poses a significant threat to the environmental stability. Access networks contribute to this consumption by being composed of numerous energy inefficient devices and network equipment. Passive Optical Networks (PONs), one of the most promising candidates in the field of access networking, should avoid this bottleneck in the backhaul power consumption by lowering the energy use of the optical devices. In this paper, we move towards that direction by introducing an energy efficient power management scheme that encompasses two major goals: a) to reduce the energy consumption by allowing the optical devices to enter the sleep mode longer, and b) to concurrently maintain the network performance. To this end, we focus on the energy consumed by the optical network units (ONUs). The intelligence of the ONUs is stimulated by enhancing the decision making in determining the duration of the sleep period with learning from experience mechanism. Learning automata (LAs) are charged to address this challenge. The evaluation of the proposed enhanced power management scheme reveals considerable improvements in terms of energy savings, while at the same time the network performance remains in high levels.
