Air quality has been a focus of attention because it has harmful effects on human health and the environment. Although air quality management strategies have been applied over recent years to reduce atmospheric pollutant concentrations, air quality problems persist. A significant proportion of the population in many regions across the earth (e.g., EU and USA) live in areas, where exceedances of air quality standards occur for ozone, and particulate matter (PM).

Air quality models simulate the physical and chemical processes that affect air pollutants using meteorological data and emission rates. The Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) Modeling System is used in our lab for regional air quality modeling. CMAQ is a multipollutant, multiscale air quality model for simulating all atmospheric and land processes that affect transport, transformation, and deposition of atmospheric pollutants on both regional and urban scales.
